Abstract

798,377. Knitting-machines. STEINHOF, K., [trading as STEINHOF, K. [Firm of]]. March 15, 1955 [May 14, 1954; Sept. 9, 1954], No. 7490/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 74 (2). A hand operated flat knitting-machine comprises main and auxiliary needle beds disposed approximately at right-angles to each other and with each needle of the auxiliary bed directly opposite a needle of the main bed. In producing a fabric plain knitting is commenced on the needles of the main bed which are operated by the usual stitch cams. Subsequently, to produce 1 x 1 rib knitting, alternate needles of the main bed are withdrawn from operation and their loops transferred to the corresponding needles of the auxiliary bed. Knitting continues by operating the cam locks of each bed separately, such that the needles of the main bed first draw loops and knit with the result that a length of yarn extends from each loop to the next around and in the hook of each needle of the auxiliary bed. These needles which have previously cleared their transferred loops are then caused to knit the length of yarn by drawing it through the cleared loops as the auxiliary cam lock moves along the bed in one direction. The auxiliary cam lock is then moved back in the reverse direction to cause the needles to clear their loops prior to the knitting of the next course which commences by knitting on the main needles first. If tuck loops are to be formed in the fabric by the auxiliary needles, the reverse movement of the auxiliary cam lock is deferred until the yarn has been fed and knitted by the main needles for the next course which also involves feeding the yarn into the hooks of the auxiliary needles. When the auxiliary cam lock is returned to its initial position it, therefore, clears the previously knitted loops and the yarn last fed into the hooks of the auxiliary needles. A third course is then knitted by the main needles and subsequently by the auxiliary needles such that their loops are drawn through the previously knitted and also around the length of yarn extending round the shanks of these needles thereby to form tuck loops. The needle beds are mounted on brackets, the auxiliary bed being adapted to be clipped in position in relation to the main bed. Specification 764,527 is referred to.
