In a flat bed knitting machine in which needles 3 are taken out of action at each end during the narrowing process the needles are controlled by slides 8 in the needle slots 1. These slides are all pivoted about a fulcrum wire 11 and are adapted to be moved longitudinally, with a projection 16 engaging in either of recesses 12, 13, 14, by means of combined cam and worm members 18-20 at each end of the machine. These members are slidable along a square section bar 17 when the latter is rotated by reason of the thread of the worm 18 engaging between hooked end portions 10 of the slides 8. The cam portions 20, 19 are adapted to move the slides 8 succesively from a forward position A, Fig. 3, to an intermediate position B and then to a withdrawn position C or vice versa according to the direction of rotation of the bar 17 at the positions A and B the slides 8 are not operated to affect the needles but in the position C, with the projections 16 in recesses 14, butts 9 on the slides are engaged by a cam bar on the cam box carriage to depress the needles 3 into their slots against springs 7. The butts 4 of these needles 3 are thereby removed from engagement by the knitting cam and such needles are out of action. The worms 18 at the respective ends of the machine are of different hand so that needles are taken out or brought into action at both ends together for narrowing and widening respectively. Another cam bar is adapted to engage the butts 9 of the slides 8 in position A so that only the needles of the slides in position B are engaged by the narrowing cam box when allowed by retraction of a third cam bar as required. Three cam bars are also provided for the knitting cam one of which is fixed and engages butts 9 of slides 8 in position C whilst the other two are movable into engagement as required for patterning effects.
