Each pattern drum 61, 62 controlling slides 51, 52 Figure 5, for engaging the jacks to select the needles of a circular machine is indexed twice for each revolution of the needle cylinder. This is achieved by the provision of the ratchet wheels 78, 79 for each drum, Figure 16, and associated pawls 75, 76 which are actuated by linkwork 71, 72, 73 controlled by cams on the cylinder drive gear, oscillating pawl arms 74, 75. The length of the teeth on the ratchet wheels is twice the distance of each index and the cams controlling the linkwork and pawls are diametrically opposed such that each pawl in turn actuates its ratchet wheel to index the drum the distance of half a ratchet wheel tooth. A bluffing member may be associated with each wheel and bluffing of either pawl causes the drum to remain stationary. The bluffing members are controlled by stop mechanism 91 operated from a case drum on the machine. The slides 51 are engaged by levers 101 controlled by jacks 100 in the pattern drum and are normally resiliently urged inwardly to engage the needle jacks to effect selection of the needles. The levers 101 are pivoted at 102 so that the jacks 100 in the drum cause the levers to withdraw their corresponding slides. The slides are also controlled in groups by stops 111 on sliding bars 112 which engage the tail ends 105 of a group of slides when projected to pivot the levers 101 and cause the corresponding slides 51 to be withdrawn from action. The stops 111 are controlled by the bars 112 having projections 117 which are engageable by levers 116 controlled by such rods 115 from a lower pattern drum. The bars 112 are mounted in a support 113 also carrying the levers 116. The butts on the needle jacks are so arranged in groups around the needle cylinder that the slides 51, 52 can be operated in groups without interfering with the operation of the machine. The pattern jacks 100 in the pattern drum are arranged in pairs to correspond with the operationo f the ratchet actuating mechanism and to permit two selections at a feeder to be made for each revolution of the needle cylinder.
