Mechanisms of this kind are in common use on knitting machinesfand especially circular knitting machines for selectively operating instrumentalities such as needles, jacks, sliders, thread guides for lap or `wrap striping effects (embroidery plating) reverse plating sinkers or like elements for patterning or designingl purposes, and it is sometimes desirable to utilize the. same patterning or controlling device or unit to produce different results, such for example as selective operation of the needles, jacks, sliders, thread. lapping or wrapping guides, sinkers or like instrumentalities as aforesaid, and the shogging of one set or series of instrumentalities in relation to another or a co-operating set ror series of instrumentalities. For instance, with regard vto lap or wrap striping it is sometimes desirable to shog the series of thread guides in relation to the needles to produce shogged effects as well as selectively to operate` the thread guides, according to patterning requirements.
The present invention has for its object to improve patterning or controlling mechanism of the kind aforesaid in certain respects as will be hereinafter set forth.

Referring to the drawingsand more particularly to Figure 2--it will be seen that the pattern device or unit comprises two drums or like parts l and 2, `one xedly and the other freely mounted co-axially on a suitable spindle, conveniently a hollow spindle such as 3 rvfor mounting rotatably on an axle or shaft 4 xed in a bracket 5 or a like support. As shown in Figure 2 the fixedly mounted drum or like part l is formed with a'central hub or boss 6 which is keyed to the spindle 3 as indicated at l. The freely mounted drum or like part 2 is formedfwith a neck S having a radial lug 9 (or a like projection) thereon at one end. The hollow spindle 3 has keyed thereon juxtapositioned cio-axial ratchet wheels Ill and il of the positive type, said wheels having teeth I2 of the same pitch and being oppositely arrangedso as to enable forward and reverse rotation vto be imparted to thespindle according to requirements as will be hereinafter more fully described. The ratchet wheely iiiy is located adjacent to the neck 8 of the freely mounted drum or like part 2, vand is connected therewith by an arrangement comprising a pair of arcuate blocks I3 (see Figure 4) located in a concentric groove i4 in the wheel, one on each side of the lug 9, a tension spring I5 engagedkwith a pair of screws I6 (or with pins or hooks) one in each block I3 at theend 13a opposing the lug 9, apair of screws I'l one inserted in each block at the other end. |31), and a pair of plates i8 attached,'e.. g., by means of screws I9 to the ratchet wheel Ill-one opposing the screw I'I in one block and the other opposing the corresponding screw in the other block. yThe blocks I3 are, as shown inv Figure 4, furnished with split lugs or clips such as 20 for the reception of the screws Il and other screws 2l are provided in said lugs or clips for fixing the screws I1 after adjustment. As will be understood the plates i8 retain the blocks I3 within the' groove I4 and also serve another purpose hereinafter to be mentioned.
t The. freely mounted drum or like part 2 has a toothed disc or yring 22attached to it at the end remote from the ratchet wheels I0 and II and a catch or detent 23 (see Figure 3) is slidably mounted on, or as shown in, the bracket 5, said catch or detent being urged into engagement with the toothed disc or ring 22 so as normally to prevent rotation of the drum or like part 2. The catch or detent 23 is operated by a cam to release the drum or like part 2 in timed relation with the operative strokes of the pawl and ratchet mechanism. In the specic example illustrated the top of the drum or like part 2 is recessed peripherally for reception of the disc or ring 22 and the latter is conveniently secured to said drum cr like part by means of screws 24. As will be seen in Figures 1 and 3 the catch or detent 23 is formed on a depending portion 25 of a small carrier plate 2G which latter is secured, as by means of a screw such as 2l', to the forward end of a bar 23. This bar is slidable longitudinally in an appropriately recessed part of the bracket 5 and projects rearwardly of the latter into the path of a cam 29 which, in the case of a circular knitting machine, revolves with or at the same speed as the cylinder or cylinders or with the cam box or cam boxes, as the case may be, so that the catch or detent is operated at every revolution of said rotary parts. The bar is controlled by a tension spring 3D one end of which is connected to a peg or screw 3I in the bracket whilst the other end is anchored to a hook 32 secured in the bar. The carrier plate 26 is formed with an open-ended slot 33 for reception of a guide pin 34 fixed in the bracket, this pin serving to steady the plate. Normally therefore, the spring 30 urges the catch or detent 23 into engagement with the toothed disc or ring 22 thereby preventing rotation of the drum or like part 2. However, at such times as the cam 29 acts upon the rear end of the bar 28 (in timed relation with the operation of the pawl and ratchet mechanism) said bar is pushed forward against the spring action with the result that the catch or detent 23 is withdrawn from the teeth of the disc or ring 22 and the drum or like part 2 is released.
The arrangement so far described is such that normally the spring I5 pulls the blocks I3 up against the lug 9. When the ratchet wheels IU and II are racked either clockwise or anticlockwise the drum or like part I is racked to a 'corresponding extent and the spring I5 is tensioned so long as the freely mounted drum or like part 2 is held by the catch or detent'23. Consequently when said catch or detent is op- 'erated to release this drum or like part the latter is racked by the spring I5. 'I'he two drums or like parts I and 2 are therefore racked one after the other. Conveniently in the application of this example of the invention to operation of knitting machine instrumentalities for patterning purposes the catch or detent 23 is operated so that the freely mounted drum or like part 2 is racked one step in thel desired direction after each step in the racking movement of' the other drum or like part I. In such application the freely mounted drum or like part may be utilized for selective operation of said instrumentalities while the other drum or like part is employed to effect the shogging of one set or series of instrumentalities relatively to another set or series of instrumentalities. For these purposes both of the said drums or like parts are adapted to receive pins, pegs, screws, presser elements or cam bits, and in this respect may be similar to each other apart from the prearrangement of such elements necessary to produce the desired dilferent results, the drum or like parts may, as shown,
be of the same size dametrically, and of the same length or of different lengths. In the specic example illustrated each drum or like part is formed with series of small holes 35 each adapted for reception of a peg 36. The drums or like parts are covered by a cylindrical casing 31 which has formed therein an opening or openings through which extend a bank of pivoted cam levers 38 of conventional form adapted to be operated selectively by the drum 2 and in turn to effect selective operation of the appropriate instrumentalities. These cam levers may, if desired be spring controlled but in any event they are mounted to turn about a pivot 39 carried by the bracket 5 (see Figure 1). With regard to the pegs 36 in the drum or like part I these are provided, in this particular example, for action, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 on a toe piece 40 of a suitably spring controlled lever 4I which latter is pivoted at 42 on a side of the bracket 5 and adapted when appropriately operated to effect, through intermediate mechanism of any conventional character, the shogging of one set or series of instrumentalities relatively to another set or series of instrumentalities. The lever 4I is controlled by a tension spring 43.
The invention may be applied to a patterning or controlling device or unit adapted to work on a vertical, horizontal or an obliquely disposed axis.
Preferably the operation of the respective parts or sections of the improved patterning or controlling mechanismv is such that the changes thereby produced occur at the same needle or are restricted to only a few of the needles so that the resultant effects in the knitting fabric are located on the same longitudinal line or thereabouts.
The invention, and especially the typical example herein described, is advantageously applicable to a patterning or controlling device or unit tted With forward and reverse racking mechanism as and for the purpose set forth in the specification of British Letters Patent No. 443,735. Thus as will be seen more particularly in Figures 3 and 5, the racking mechanism includes two clawkers 44 and 45 for driv1ng the ratchet Wheels I0 and II respectively, these clawkers being mounted on a reciprocatory bar 46 which is slidable through the bracket 5 and slotted at 41 to accommodate the axle or shaft 4. Screw and nut means 48 are provided to set the clawkers in the required positions on the bar 46 and the latter is formed with open-ended slots 49 to permit of adjustment of said clawkers. A lever 50 may conveniently be pivoted to the bar 46 at 5I and adapted to be operated, for reciprocating the bar, from timing or controlling mechanism on the machine; alternatively, the bar may be reciprocated directly from cam means revolving with or at the same speed as the aforesaid rotary parts. The bar 46 is controlled by a suitably arranged compression spring 52 (see Figure 5) and the clawkers are connected together by a tension spring 53. A bluff member 54, formed with arcuate bluff portions 55, is mounted between the ratchet Wheels I0 and I I and arranged for turning movement about the axis of the axle or shaft 4. This member is movable angularly under the control of suitable mechanism to release one or other of the clawkers for engagement with the corresponding ratchet wheel or to render both clawkers inoperative, all as described in the prior specication aforesaid. In the specific example illustrated the bluff member is adapted tobe operatedbya bell crank 56 which'is pivoted on-the'bracket 5 and connected tofany operating 'rod 51.`
For racking the device manually when required there may, as shown more lclearly in Figure 6, be provided a handle 58 which is also `suit-- ably mountedv to turn about the axis of the axle or shaft and is formed with an arml 59 which carries a spring-controlled pawl B0 adaptedfor engagement with the ratchet wheel H.
Moreover, the example herein described may advantageously be employed in connection with the operation of the thread guides in the thread lapping or wrapping mechanism in a machine of the double axially opposed needle cylinder type as described and claimed'in thespeciiica.- tion of British Letters Patent No. 455,801,y the freely mounted drum or like part 2 being adapted for selective operation of the thread guides and the other drum or like part beingA adapted to effect shogging movement of .the thread guides in relation to the needles l to'A be lapped or Wrapped. l
As shown in Figures l and 3 the bracket 5- is formed with lugs 3i formed with bearings for reception-of a postlnot shown)r fixed on the machine, said bracket being supported on this post in any suitable manner and arrangedfor swinging bodily movement on the latter solas to enable the pattern deviceor unit as a Whole` to be readily moved into or away from its operative position. In this connection means of any con-r venient character may, ii' desired, be provided to render the pattern device or unit operative and inoperative automatically as and when required. In any event a spring-controlled bolt member is preferably provided-to maintain the bracket 5 in its position` of` use, said member being manually operable at will to release the bracket and enable it to be swung clear ofl adjacent parts of the machine` as and When required. Such a bolt member is indicatedvat-SZ in Figures l and Band, as will be seen, is recessed at @3 for engagement witha suitably positioned fixed part of the machine. member, moreover, is provided on a-bar 6i! which is slidable in the bracket and controlled by a tensiony spring S5. A retaining plate B serves to Vprevent the bar iid fromcoming adrift from the bracket. The arrangement is Atherefore such that the bolt member, which is conveniently furnished with a knob 61 or the like, can be Withdrawn against spring action from engagement with the aforesaid iixed part, and vice versa.
Means ci a frictional character may be provided in conjunction with the drum or like part i to prevent this from over-running when racked round by the racking mechanism. Conveniently for tl'n's purpose, and as shown in Figure. 2, a spring-pressed disc 63 is adapted to act frictionally upon the bottom of thev drum l. This disc is mounted on the hub 6 and held down. by an intermediate member $9 which is in turn acted upon by compression springs such as 10. Adjustment of these springs can be eiected by appropriate manipulation of the nuts 'H and the lower ends of said springs` project through openings 12 provided in a part 'I3 which is prevented from rotation by a stud .M passed into it through the bracket 5.
As regards circular knitting machines the invention is applicable to patterning or controlling mechanism adapted for use in machines of the stationary as Well as the rotaryneedle cylinder type, and in plain (non-rib) machines as wellas The bolt in machines` of the cylinder and dial type and. of `the double axiallyopposed needle cylinder type for producing fabric in the piece, or knitted articles such as. body garments or parts thereof, or seamless hose, half-hose and like articles, separately or in string formation.
What we claim then is: f
1. Controlling'mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, a part pre-f vanother part presenting a controlling formation, n spring means associated with the second men-r tioned part and adapted to be loaded by said pawl and ratchet mechanism and, when required, to impart movement to said second mentioned part, and means for releasably holding the latter from movement until the spring means are loaded, whereby upon release of said ysecond mentioned part the spring means function to impart movement thereto.
3. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, .in combination, a part presenting a controlling formation, actuating means for operating said part positively, another part presenting a controlling formation, a 'tension spring arranged between said actuating mechanism and the second mentioned part,'said spring being adapted to be tensioned by the actuating mechanism, and means for releasably holding' said second mentioned part from movement until. the tension spring has been tensioned, whereby upon release ofk said lpart the s ring functions to impart movement to the latter. t
4l. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, a part presenting a controlling formation, actuating means i v adapted to transmit movement to said part positively first in one direction and the-n in the opposite` direction for desired periods respectively, another part presenting a controlling formation, spring means associated with the second mentioned part and adapted to be loaded by said actuating means and, when required, to impart movement to said second mentioned part, and means for releasably holding the latter `from movement ,until the spring means are loadedp whereby upon release of said second mentioned part the spring means function tcv impart movement thereto.
5. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, a part presenting a controlling formation, actuating means adapted to transmit movement to said part positively first in one direction and then in the opposite direction for desired periods respectively, another part presenting a controlling formation, a tension spring arranged betweensaid actuating mechanism and the second mentioned part, said spring being adapted to be tensioned by the actuating mechanism, and means for releas'ably holding saidfsecond mentioned part from movement until the tension spring has been tensioned, whereby upon release of said part the spring functions to impart movement to the latter Whether said movement be a forward or a reverse movement.
6. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, a part presenting a controlling formation, actuating means for operating said part positively, another part presenting a controlling formation, spring means associated with the second mentioned part and adapted to be loaded by said actuating means and, when required, to impart movement to said second mentioned part, a member which is applied to the spring operated part and furnished with teeth, a catch for co-operation with said teeth to hold said spring operated part from movement whenever the spring means are being loaded by the actuating means, and means for moving the catch out of engagement with the toothed member to release the spring operated part at predetermined times whereupon the spring means function to impart movement to said spring operated part.
7. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, a bracket, a spindle rotatable in said bracket, a drum which presents a controlling formation and is xedly mounted on said spindle, actuating means for rotating said drum positively step-by-step, another drum which presents a controlling formation and is freely mounted on said spindle, spring means which are associated with the freely mounted drum and adapted to be loaded by the actuating means, and means for releasably holding the freely mounted drum from movement until the spring means are loaded, whereby upon release of said freely mounted drum the spring means function to impart movement thereto.
8. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprisng, in combination, a bracket, a spindle rotatable in said bracket, a drum which presents a controlling formation and is xedly mounted on said spindle, actuating means adapted to transmit turning movement to said drum positively rst in one direction and then in the opposite direction for desired periods respectively, another drum which presents a controlling formation and is freely mounted on said spindle, spring means which are associated with the freely mounted drum and adapted to be loaded by the actuating means, and means for releasably holding the freely mounted drum from movement until the spring means are loaded, whereby upon release of said freely mounted drum the spring means function to impart movement thereto.
9. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, a bracket, a spindle rotatable in said bracket, a drum which presents a controlling formation and is xedly mounted on said spindle, actuating means for rotating said drum positively step-by-step, another drum which presents a controlling formation and is freely mounted on said spindle, a tension spring arranged between said actuating means and the freely mounted drum, said spring being adapted to be tensioned by the actuating means, and means for releasably holding said freely mounted drum from. movement until the tension spring has been tensioned, whereby upon release of said last mentioned drum the spring functions to impart movement to the latter.
10. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine, comprising, in combination, a bracket, a spindle rotatable in said bracket, a drum which presents a controlling formation and is xedly mounted on said spindle, two juxtapositioned coaxial ratchet wheels which are keyed on the spindle, said wheels having teeth of the same pitch and being oppositely arranged, actuating means adapted for co-operation with said teeth so as to impart forward and reverse rotation to the spindle according to requirements, another drum which presents a controlling formation and is freely mounted on said spindle, spring means which are associated with the freely mounted drum and adapted to be loaded by the actuating means, and means for releasably holding the freely mounted drum from movement until the spring means are loaded, whereby upon release of said freely mounted drum the spring means function to impart movement thereto.
11. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprisingi.n combination, a bracket, a spindle rotatable in said bracket, a drum which presents a controlling formation and is xedly mounted on said spindle, two juxtapositioned coaxial ratchet wheels which are keyed on the spindle, said wheels having teeth of the same pitch and being oppositely arranged, a pair of spring-controlled clawkers one for co-operation with each ratchet wheel, a bar upon which said clawkers are mounted, means for reciprocating said bar to impart operative and idle strokes to the clawkers, a movable bluff member formed with arcuate bluiing portions for controlling engagement of the clawkers with the ratchet wheels, said wheels, clawkers and associated parts together constituting means for enabling forward and reverse rotation to be imparted to the spindle according to requirements, another drum which presents a controlling formation and is freely mounted on said spindle, spring means which are associated with the freely mounted drLun and adapted to be loaded by the actuating means, and means for releasably holding the freely mounted drum from movement until the spring means are loaded, whereby upon release of said freely mounted drum the spring means function to impart movement thereto.
l2. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, a bracket, a spindle rotatable in said bracket, a drum which presents a controlling formation and is xedly mounted on said spindle, two juxtapositioned coaxial ratchet wheels which are keyed on the spindle, said wheels having teeth of the same pitch and being oppositely arranged, a pair of springcontrolled clawkers one for co-operation with each ratchet wheel, a bar upon which said clawkers are mounted, means for reciprocating said bar to impart operative and idle strokes to the clawkers, a movable bluff member formed with arcuate blufling portions for controlling engagement of the clawkers with the ratchet wheels, said wheels, clawkers and associated parts together constituting means for enabling forward and reverse rotation! to be imparted to the spindle according to requirements, another drum which presents a controlling formation and is freely mounted on the aforesaid spindle, a tension spring arranged between said actuating means and the freely mounted drum, said spring being adapted to be tensioned by the actuating means, and means for releasably holding said freely mounted drum from movement until the tension spring has been tensioned, whereby upon release of said last mentioned drum the spring functions to impart movement to the latter.
13. Controlling mechanism for a knitting maspindle rotatable in said bracket, a drum which presents a controlling formation and is nxedly mounted on said spindle, two juxtapositioned co.-
axial ratchet wheels which are keyed on the spindle, ysaid wheels having teeth of the same pitch and 'being oppositely arranged, actuating means adapted for co-operation with said teeth so as to impart forward and reverse rotation to the spindle according to requirements, another controlling drum which has formed thereon a radial lug and is freely mounted on said spindle,
a pair of blocks mounted for movement slidably in one of the ratchet wheels, one on each side of said lug, a pair of pins one in each block at the end thereof opposing the lug, a tension spring which is engaged with said pins, a pair of screws one inserted in each block at the other end, a
pair of plates attached to the last mentioned ratchet wheel, one plate opposing the screw in one block and the other plate opposing the screw in the other block, the arrangement being such presents a controlling formation and is fixedly l mounted on said spindle, actuating means for rotating said drum positively step-by-step, an
other drum which presents a controlling forma-A tion and is freely mounted on said spindle, spring means which are associated with the freely mounted drum and adapted to be loaded by the actuating means, a toothed member which is attached to the freely mounted drum, a catch for co-operation with said toothed member to hold the freely mounted drum from movement whenever the spring means are being loaded byv the actuating means, a part which carries said catch and is slidably mounted in the aforesaid bracket, and means for moving the catch outof engagement with the `toothed member to release the freely mounted drum at predetermined times whereupon the spring means function to Aimpart movement to the latter. c
15. Controlling mechanism according to claim i4, wherein the catch is operated by a'cam in timed relation with the operative movements of the actuating means. v
i6. Controlling mechanismaccording to claim 6, wherein the catch is operated in such a way that the spring operated part is racked one step vafter each step in the racking movement of the other controlling part.
17. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, al bracket, a spindle rotatable in said bracket, a drum which presents a controlling formation and is iixedly mounted on said spindle, two juxtapositioned con axial ratchet Wheels which are keyed on the spindle, said wheels having teeth of the same pitch and being oppositely arranged, a pair of spring-controlled clawkers one for co-operation with each ratchet wheel, a bar. upon which said clawkers are mounted, means for reciprocating said bar to impart operativeand idle strokes to the clawkers, a movable bluff member formed with arcuate blufng portions for controlling enn gagement of the clawkers with the ratchet wheels, said Wheels, clawkers and associated parts together constituting means for enabling forward and reverse rotation to be` imparted tothe spindle according to requirements, another controliing drum vwhich has formed thereon a radial lug and is freely mounted on said spindle, a pair of blocks mounted for movement slidably in one of the ratchet wheels, one on each side of said lug, a pair of pins one in each block at the end.
thereof opposing the lug, a tension spring which is engaged with said pins, a pair of screws one 'f inserted in each block at the other end, apair of plates attached to the last mentioned ratchet wheel, one plate opposing the screw in one block and the other plate opposing the screw in the other block, the arrangement being such that the spring is tensioned as the result of operation of the actuating means, a toothed member which is attached to the freely mounted drum, a catch for co-operation with said toothed vmember to heid the freely mounted drum from movement whenever the spring means are being loaded by the actuating means, a part which carries said catch and is slidably mounted in the aforesaid bracket, andmeans for moving the catch out of engagement with the toothed member to release the freely mounted drum at predetermined times whereupon the spring means function to impart movement to the latter.
i8. Controlling mechanism for a knitting machine comprising, in combination, a. part presenting a controlling formation, actuating means for operating said part positively, another part presenting a controlling formation, means associated with the second mentioned part and adapted to Vbe influenced by said actuating means and, when required, to impart movement to said second mentioned part, and means for releasably holding the latter from movement until the first mentioned part has been operated by the actuating means, whereby upon release of the second mentioned part the aforesaid means inuenced by the actuating means then function to impart movement to said second mentioned part.
