A straight bar knitting machine has a vertical bed in which alternate needles 22 are fixed to the main needle bar 21 and intermediate needles 24 are fixed in an auxiliary bar 23 and 13 characterized in that rack gears 25 fixed to the auxiliary bar are movable by oscillatable gears 31. As shown in Fig. 6 a plate 64 with extensions 66, 67 is connected to a gear 58 meshing with a gear 57 which is fixed to shaft 28. As the needle bed descends (Fig. 7) extension 67 hits the screw 74 causing partial rotation of the cam 33 which engages the detent 35. On the next descent the slide 71 is moved so that extension 67 engages a higher stop 73 and more rotation of the shaft 28 is caused and thus the auxiliary needle bed is raised. To lower the needle bed the same procedure takes place with extension 66 and screws 72 and 73. The slide 71 is operated from a system of levers controlled by a series of cams on the main machine shaft Fig. 1 (not shown). Each needle clamp may be opened separately by means of a clamping latch 53 Fig. 3 (now shown) and a hard rubber pad 46 is provided in the jaws of the clamps to provide a firm grip.
