Abstract

638,717. Batteries. OLDHAM & SON, Ltd., and MARTIN, J. R. July 9,1948, No. 20363/47. [Class 53] A battery-filling opening is provided with a rotatable ring 10 having in its sloping wall apertures 12a which register with apertures 8 in the sloping wall of the filling opening. When the stopper 16 is in position gas can thus escape from the battery through the vent 22. When the battery is to be topped up, the stopper is rotated, which causes the ring 10 to rotate and close the openings 8. The stopper is then removed. When the added water causes the electrolyte to reach the lower end of the depending skirt 6, the air in the space S is trapped and the electrolyte rises in the filling tube and indicates that the required amount of water has been added. When the stopper is replaced, it engages the ring 10 and the two rotate together, whereby the apertures 8 are again opened and any electrolyte which has risen in the tube 6 falls back into the battery.
