Abstract

648,524. Accumulators. PLUMMER, R. J., and CEAG, Ltd. Nov. 26, 1948, No. 30761. [Class 53] The gas vent of an accumulator is enclosed in a chamber 9 which retains the gases evolved during charging. The chamber is welded in an opening 6 in the accumulator cover and is threaded at its lower end to receive the vent stopper 7 which is removed when the accumulator is to be filled with electrolyte. The stopper is provided with metal and 'rubber washers 11, 12 which are compressed by a flange 10 on the stopper when the latter is screwed into place. Gas vent openings 14 in the stopper are covered by a rubber tube 15 and communicate with the hollow interior 13 of the stopper which may be divided by a metal strip 18 having a curved or bent lower end 19 to deflect to one side liquid passing into the stopper. Alternatively the lower end of the strip 18 may be provided with a hinged flap or other one-way valve so that liquid passing up one side of the strip 18 returns down the other side and is returned to the accumulator without reaching the chamber 9. The chamber 9 is closed by a rubber cap 17 in the form shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 1 the chamber 9 is closed by a rubber or other pad 16 carried by the lid 2 of the accumulator container. The lid is hinged at 3 and carries a cable 5 which engages the accumulator terminals when the lid is closed.
