Abstract
665,223. Batteries. LEWIS, H. W. June 7, 1950 [June 25, 1949], No. 16914/49. Class 53. A device for preventing over-filling of a battery comprises a tube a depending from the lid of the battery and terminating at the required electrolyte level. A flexible or elastic tube e leads from a side opening in the tube a and is fixed in a stopper g having an opening f communicating with the atmosphere. Gas evolved from the battery passes through the tube e. When liquid is to be introduced into the battery the stopper g is removed and the tube e is pinched in one of a number of notches d, as shown in Fig. 2, thus closing the passage through the tube and forming an air-lock above the electrolyte when this reaches the lower end of tube a. The stopper g may be of various shapes and other arrangements may be adopted for closing the tube e. Fig. 7 shows the tube e provided with a valve m which closes an opening r in a stopper o when this is lifted. The stopper is hollow as shown to receive the upper end of the tube e which is provided with openings p communicating with the atmosphere through the opening r.
