Abstract

680,867. Batteries. ALKALINE BATTERIES, Ltd. July 17, 1951 [Aug. 10, 1950], No. 19892/50. Class 53. A gas vent comprises a hollow body <SP>c</SP> having a passage e at the top and side openings h closed by an elastic band i. When the battery is in use the passage e is closed by a rubber pad g carried by the battery lid g<SP>1</SP>. When the battery is to be charged the lid is raised. If the lid is inadvertently closed when the battery is being charged or if the passage e becomes blocked, any gas evolved from the battery escapes through the openings h. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the body c is shaped at its lower end as shown at j to facilitate return of electrolyte condensing on the walls of the bore d. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the bore d is provided with a partition m terminating a short distance from the passage e, one side of the bore being cut away to form a hole or gap k. If the battery is inverted when the lid g<SP>1</SP> is closed, the bore d becomes filled with electrolyte which runs back into the battery when this is returned to its normal position, the side of the bore d not containing the gap acting as a syphon to draw off the liquid from the side containing the gap.
