Abstract

728,945. Batteries. SVENSKA ACKUMULATOR AKTIEBOLAGET JUNGNER. March 3, 1953 [March 8, 1952], No. 5954/53. Class 53. A battery is provided with a venting device comprising a casing 1 enclosing a valve 5 which is closed against its seat 4 if the battery is tilted. The valve is carried by a rod 6 which has a ball and socket connection 12 with a member 7 which is shaped as a body of revolution resting at 10 on the bottom of a chamber 8. A flange 11 centres the member 7. Gas from the battery normally escapes through ducts 9, 20. When the battery is tilted the member 7 rocks and raises the rod 6 causing the valve 5 to close against the seat 4. Liquid finding its way into the well 21 returns to the battery through a passage 22. A tube 23 prevents splashing of electrolyte against the valve 5 which may be made of polyethylene or other material not readily wetted by liquid. Passages 16 closed by a rubber ring 17 allow gases to escape if the pressure rises too high.
