Abstract
451,671. Batteries. SWAN, A., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. Feb. 9, 1935, No. 4238. [Class 53] [See also Group XXIX] Liquid is supplied to a battery through a pipe 10, the supply being automatically controlled by a valve 6 to maintain a constant level of electrolyte in the battery. The valve 6 which may be in the form of a diaphragm normally closes the end of a pipe 8 leading from the supply pipe 10 and is situated in the upper end of a tube 4 projecting downwards into the battery. When the electrolyte falls below the normal level it unseals the lower end of the tube 4. The air pressure in the tube 4 is thus reduced and the pressure of liquid in the pipe 8 opens the valve 6. When the level of the electrolyte in the battery rises sufficiently it closes the tube 4 and the increase of pressure on the air in the tube raises the diaphragm 6 till it closes the end of the pipe 8. The pipe 10 is connected to a reservoir of liquid. Gases liberated in the battery escape through holes 20. The diaphragm 6 may be made of oiled silk or rubber and instead of forming the valve it may carry a valve at its centre. Other types of valve may be used such as a mercury valve or a valve of the piston, liquid or mechanical type.
