Abstract

893,885. Batteries. TUDOR A.B. Oct. 26, 1959 [Nov. 6, 1958], No. 36221/59. Class 53. A device for circulating the electrolyte in a battery cell 13 comprises a tube 11 through which air is blown from a chamber 5 having inlet and outlet valves 9, 12 and a flexible diaphragm 10. Above the diaphragm the chamber is filled with liquid 6 which communicates through a pipe 8 with liquid 16 in a cylinder 1 having a flexible diaphragm 4 attached to a piston 2. When a solenoid 3 is energized the piston is raised to the position shown in Fig. 1, and when the solenoid is de-energized the piston moves downwardly due to its weight depressing the diaphragm into the position shown by the dotted line. Liquid discharged from the cylinder 1 depresses the diaphragm 10 and air is discharged from the chamber 5 into the tube 11. In a modification the cylinder 1 and liquid 16 are omitted, the chamber 5 being closed by a flexible diaphragm which is actuated directly by the core of a solenoid, Fig. 2 (not shown).
