Abstract
696,805. Batteries. BUREAU TECHNIQUE GAUTRAT. Feb. 22, 1952 [Feb. 27, 1951], No. 4754/52. Class 53. A part of the cell wall of a storage battery is made of a material which will allow gases to diffuse through it but which is impervious to liquids. Fig. 1 shows a cell having a metal container 1 closed at the bottom by a plate 6 having an aperture 7 above which is a diaphragm 9 made, for example, of polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene and secured in position by a packing ring 11. A grid 8 may be interposed between the diaphragm 9 and plate 6. The cell is otherwise sealed and gases evolved in the normal operation of the battery are caused to combine with the active materials in the accumulator as described in Specifications 677,724 and 685,341, any excess of gas not absorbed by the electrodes diffusing out through the diaphragm 9. Before the cell is sealed the electrodes may first be fully charged the negative electrode being then slightly discharged either by means of an auxiliary electrode or by adding an oxidizing substance to the electrolyte. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the aperture 7 is replaced by a U-shaped slot 12 forming a tongue 13 in the plate 6 and serving as a safety device. If the gas pressure rises too high the tongue 13 bends and tears the diaphragm 9.
