Abstract
782,394. Batteries. ACCUMULATORENFABRIK AKT.-GES. July 14, 1955 [July 14, 1954], No. 20414/55. Class 53. In a gas-tight accumulator, particularly an alkaline accumulator, having the positive and negative electrodes spaced apart by one or more separators which are pervious to liquid but impervious to gas bubbles and also having part of the electrodes in contact with a gas space in the container and the electrolyte held by capilliary action in the separators and the pores of the electrodes, the positive electrodes contain both positive and negative active material and the capacity of the positive active material alone is less than or at most only slightly greater than that of the negative electrodes whilst the capacity of the mixed positive and negative active material in the positive electrodes is so much greater than that of the negative electrodes that with excessive discharge of the accumulator oxygen is generated at the negative electrodes while the positive electrodes have still not given up their whole quantity of chaige. The positive electrode may be arranged to have a greater charge than the negative electrode at the moment of sealing by charging the accumulator whilst in the open condition and filled with electrolyte to the full extent of both positive and negative electrodes, emptying the electrolyte and sealing the container. The accumulator may then be discharged as far as complete discharge of the negative electrode. Alternatively, the accumulator whilst in the open condition and filled with electrolyte may be charged to the full extent of both positive and negative electrodes and then discharged at most as far as the complete discharge of the negative electrodes, the electrolyte then being emptied out and the accumulator sealed. Each positive electrode may be formed as a double electrode as described in Specification 741,305, [Group XXXIX], and a single negative electrode may be used with one or a pair of positive electrodes as described in Specification 755,547.
