760,014. Batteries. ACCUMULATORENFABRIK AKT.-GES. Aug. 21, 1953 [Oct. 25, 1952], No. 23151/53. Class 53. A permanently sealed alkaline accumulator has thin electrodes having such a large surface area that with the normal charging current the amount of oxygen released from the positive electrode per unit area is sufficiently small to cause it to dissolve in the electrolyte and migrate to the surface of the negative electrode where it is absorbed. Any small amount of oxygen which cannot dissolve in the electrolyte escapes into the space above the electrolyte where it is absorbed by the exposed parts of the negative electrode. No hydrogen is evolved from the negative electrode. The electrodes are separated by thin absorbent separators which hold the electrolyte and the positive and negative electrodes are of substantially the same capacity.
