Abstract

658,660. Batteries. LUCAS, Ltd., J. Jan. 24, 1949, No. 1858. [Class 53] A filling device for an accumulator which also indicates when the correct amount of liquid has been added comprises a tube f which passes through a perforated screen c within a tubular member a secured to or forming a part of the battery lid b. The screen may be in the form of a piston and may rest on a ledge e formed on the member a. The lower end of the tube f terminates at the required level of the electrolyte. The device may be closed by a removable cover h. When liquid is poured into the battery through the tube a it passes through the screen until it reaches and seals the tube f whereupon further liquid poured into the tube a remains in the tube above the screen, thus giving a visual indication that the required amount of liquid has been added. Any liquid remaining in the tube a runs into the battery when first charged, the gas evolved raising the screen and tube f and thus unsealing the lower end of the tube.
