Abstract
574,637. Galvanic batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd. (Woodbridge, J. L.). Aug. 10, 1944, No. 15273. [Class 53] The filling opening of an accumulator is provided with means for indicating when the correct amount of electrolyte bas been introduced into the accumulator and for allowing air and gas trapped beneath the cover to escape gradually through the filling opening. As shown in Fig. 1 the filling opening comprises a tube 12 which extends downwardly to the level of the electrolyte which rises in the tube when the correct amount has been introduced. Disposed within the tube is a bridge piece 15 formed with a well 18 communicating through ducts 21 with the space 20 beneath the cover of the accumulator. A small opening 19 may be formed in the bottom of the well. When electrolyte is poured into the accumulator the well becomes filled and closes the ducts 21. After the filling operation the electrolyte in the well drains through the opening 19 and gas can then escape through the ducts and tube 12. If the opening 19 is not provided the gas bubbles through the liquid in the well. The upper end of the tube 12 is screw threaded for the reception of a gas vent. Fig 7. shows a modification in which the bridge piece 15 is moulded separately from the tube 12 and is provided with projections 23 which drop into slots formed in the lower end of the tube 12 where they may be cemented in position. The ducts 21 are drilled through the member 15 after it has been made.
