Abstract

512,741. Batteries. FABBRICA ITALIANA MAGNETI MARELLI. Nov. 15, 1938, No. 33239. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1937. [Class 53] An invertible accumulator, having a vent plug whose inner orifice is always outside the mass of liquid in the container irrespective of the position of the latter, has a channelshaped screen mounted around the plug in a hollow cover without forming a tight closure to prevent too rapid transfer of electrolyte. A container 1, Fig 1, is closed by a hollow lid 2 in which is a vent plug consisting of a collar 9 having an inwardly projecting nosepiece 10 through which passes a conduit 11. Around this nose-piece 10 is a chamber 13 formed by a member 12 in the lower end of which is a communicating hole 14. At the upper end of the plug is a chamber 15 closed by a further member 16 having a hole 19 communicating with a depression 20. Around the plug is a channel-shaped screen 21 so designed as to allow only a small space between itself and the side walls of the container so that, when the cell is inverted, the transfer of the electrolyte takes place comparatively slowly. The position of the vent hole 14 is such that it is always above the levels L, L<1> of the electrolyte in the normal and inverted positions respectively. In order that the upper electrolyte space may be of convenient shape and volume, the cell is made as shallow as possible and for this purpose the plates 4 are made broad in relation to their height and to overcome the resultant increase in resistance additional ribs 4<11> are provided radiating from the terminal post 4‹. Where a number of cells are employed side by side in one block the electrical connections between adjacent cells may be made through the separating walls, Fig. 4 (not shown). To enable the correct level of electrolyte to be maintained, the screen 21 may have depressions 21<1> formed in its lower surface in which electrolyte will lie when the level is correct and which may be observed by removing the vent plug 9. Alternatively a suitably placed observation window may be mounted in a side wall of the container, Fig. 3 (not shown).
