Abstract

598,413. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd., and GRAY, R. Sept. 3, 1945, Nos. 22585 and 28924. [Class 53] To enable the level of the electrolyte in an accumulator to be gauged or seen, a cup d is attached to a slotted skirt b depending from the lid of the accumulator. The bottom of the cup is below the normal level of the electrolyte and is provided with openings or slots e of varying heights or at different levels. The interior of the cup is provided with a device or means for enabling the electrolyte level to be seen when the filling plug is removed. For this purpose the interior wall of the cup above the normal electrolyte level may be of a different colour from the lower part. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the lower part of the cup is provided with a partition f which slopes from the bottom of the cup to a shoulder g representing the normal electrolyte level. The cup also serves to prevent electrolyte from splashing against the vent plug and protects the separators between the plates from damage by hydrometers and other testing instruments inserted in the electrolyte in the cup. The cup does not entirely close the slots in the skirt b which form passages for the escape of gas. Instead of the partition f the cup may contain a float which can be seen when the filling plug is removed. Fig. 3 shows a further modification in which a float j in the cup is provided with a stem k which projects through openings in the bottom and top of the gas vent plug n. The stem k carries marks o to indicate the normal and lowest allowable levels of the electrolyte.
