Abstract

1,268,097. Secondary batteries; automatic topping-up devices. M. FISCHER. 2 April, 1969 [3 April, 1968], No. 17400/69. Heading H1B. A storage battery containing free liquid electrolyte includes an automatic topping-up device which comprises a supply container 1 capable of holding a supply of battery liquid, a removable cover 7 for the container, a vent 8 to allow the escape of gases from the upper region of the container, a pipe capable of conducting gas from the battery box into the container, an outlet connection for the supply of liquid from the container to the battery box which allows liquid to pass when the electrolyte in the box falls below a perdetermined height, and at least one baffle in the pipe or in the container to catch electrolyte droplets in the gases leaving the battery and return them to the liquid in the container. The pipe and the outlet connection may be the same member or different members. As shown in Fig. 1, the pipe and the outlet connection are both provided by a pipe 4 extending into the battery box to the predetermined electrolyte level. The baffle 5 is of tubular shape, carries ribs 6 which contact the outside of pipe 4 and bears closely against the cover 7. In other embodiments the baffles are volutes, labyrinthine, inside the combined pipe and outlet connection which is in the form of an inverted J, provided with a valve to vent gas in the event of too large a rise in pressure, or is provided with its own top closure (Figs. 3-8 not shown). As shown in Fig. 9 a separate outlet connection 11 is provided and both it and the pipe has a ball valve. The baffle 10 is in the form of a labyrinth.
