Abstract
691,165. Batteries. TEPATRA AKT.-GES. Nov. 1, 1951 [Nov. 5, 1950], No. 25577/51. Class 53. Dry electrolyte and a solvent therefor are housed separately in the zinc container of a dry cell and are brought together when the cell is required for use by movement of the carbon electrode, manganese dioxide depolarizer and the body carrying the dry electrolyte. Fig. 1 shows a cell in which the dry electrolyte is carried in a body of cellulose or textile tape 4 wound round the depolarizer 3, the solvent 14 being enclosed in a receptacle 5 which can be broken by a downward movement of the carbon electrode 2 and members 3, 4. A perforated cellulose disc 16 allows the liquid from the broken receptacle 5 to enter passages 13 in the depolarizer whence it percolates into the absorbent material 4. The carbon electrode is provided with a metal cap 6 having a groove 7 which engages the cover 9 when the electrode is pushed down. The cover may be made of synthetic rubber reinforced with metal pieces 8. The negative electrode of the cell consists of a zinc cup 1 having a covering 10 to which a cover 12 is attached which can be removed by tearing away an embedded string 11. The solvent 14 may consist of a mixture of water and ethylene glycol containing zinc chloride and lithium chloride.
