Abstract
262,049. Weissmann, G. Nov. 30, 1925, [Convention date]. Electrodes.-An electric cell comprises a negative electrode constituted by sheet of zinc a, provided with a pervious and insulating coating b, folded over so as to form a deformable container, and a positive electrode e of carbon positioned within the depolarizing agent d, preferably a mixture of manganese dioxide and graphite, which is in a powdered state and contained within a bag c also of pervious insulating material. The bag c is placed within the space formed bv the negative electrode and the whole is subjected to a strong, compression, which condition is retained by means of an outer tightening cover f which is preferably formed by an inextensible band wound round the cell and soldered or cemented thereon. The electrolyte is then poured in until the absorbent materials b, c are saturated when the cell is closed with layers g, h of wax &13. In a modification the, compressed cell is placed in a fluid-tight bag before applying the cover f so as to eliminate the use of the lower wax layer g. As applied to ,a liquid cell, the compressed block is surrounded by a perforated inextensible cover f<1>, Fig. 6, and the whole placed in a container filled with the electrolyte. Fig. 9 illustrates a further modification wherein means such as a hole s is provided in the base of a dry cell to enable a new charge of electrolyte or water to be easily introduced if required. The hole s is normally closed by a plug t and, to prevent risk of leakage, the cell may be placed in a case v. A spongy material x is preferably provided in the bottom of the cell.
