Abstract

493,694. Batteries. BORNEMISZA, S., BARON VON THYSSEN-. Feb. 12, 1937, Nos. 4227, 4228, 4229, and 4231. Convention dates, Feb. 12, 1936, June 27, 1936, Aug. 24, 1936, and Oct. 13, 1936. [Class 53] In a process for charging an accumulator having a sulphuric acid electrolyte and in which the active materials consist of lead and cadmium, current is passed through the accumulator till about À06 gram of cadmium has been deposited on each square centimetre of negative electrode which may consist of carbon, cadmium or lead or of the accumulator container. The cadmium may be introduced into the accumulator by employing an electrolyte of cadmium sulphate or by coating the negative electrode with cadmium and using the accumulator as a primary cell whereby the cadmium is dipssolved in the electrolyte. A layer of oil may be placed on the electrolyte during the charging process. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 shows in Fig. 1 (Cancelled) an accumulator comprising a vessel a of sheet cadmium containing an electrode b of lead superoxide and a porous filling c saturated with concentrated sulphuric acid. The upper rim of the vessel is protected by lacquer x. A modification in which the electrodes are in the form of plates is also described. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
