Abstract
659,367. Primary batteries. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Sept. 8, 1949, No. 23311. Convention date, Jan. 27. [Class 53] A primary cell has a carbon electrode surrounded by manganese dioxide, the second electrode consisting of magnesium which may be alloyed with aluminium zinc, manganese, cerium and zirconium. The electrolyte is a solution of an alkali metal bromide or an alakline earth metal bromide which may contain a chromate of the same metals or of ammonium to lessen corrosion of the magnesium electrode. The preferred electrolyte is a solution containing magnesium bromide and lithium bromide. Fig. 1 shows a cell divided by a perforated partition 4 covered on one side with filter paper or other porous material 6. Compartment 2 contains the magnesium electrode 7 and electrolyte, the carbon electrode 10 and manganese dioxide depolarizes moistened with electrolyte being in the compartment 3. A dry cell in which the magnesium electrode forms the container is also described.
