Abstract
638,674. Making electric lamp stems. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Aug. 8, 1947, No. 22083. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1941. [Class 39 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] Apparatus arranged to be embodied in a turret machine for making electric lamp stems comprises a pair of jaws 1, 2 at the extremities of arms 3, 4 which pivot about studs 5 on a head 6, the jaws being so shaped that, when abutting, they form a hollow, inverted, truncated circular cone adapted to receive the flange 17 of a flare 7, Fig. 2, and, in order to ensure that leading-in wires and an exhausting tube supported by a block 11 shall be aligned properly preparatory to sealing within the throat 16 of the flare, the periphery of the base of the cone is provided with three inwardly-directed radial tangs 18 which are spaced equidistantly and each located immediately above a nub 19 on the inner surface of the cone. The meeting edges of the jaws are milled or bevelled so that one overlaps the other to form a baffle which shields the flare flange from the flame applied to the throat 16. The block 11 is provided with two small holes 14 to receive the lead-in wires during sealing, and a baffle 15 protects the jaw-actuating mechanism from the sealing flames. The opening and closing of the jaws is effected in known manner by link mechanism actuated by a cam shaft 8.
