Abstract

644,691. Uniting metal to glass. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Aug. 3, 1948, No. 20527. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1947. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXIII] A metal ring 25 is joined to a glass tube 29 by means of a low melting point split glass ring 23, the ends of which do not lie opposite to one another. The ring may consist for example of a single turn of a helix as shown in Fig. 6. The helix may be polygonal in contour and in making the joint it is centred in position by lugs 27 on the metal ring 25 which is supported on a rotatable platform 31 carrying pins 33 to locate the metal ring in position. A second series of pins 35 projecting from the platform 31 carries a plate 37 having a recess 39 which receives the glass tube 29. A flame 41 is played upon the ring 23 and lower end of tube 29, while the platform 31 and plate 37 are uniformly rotated. The glass helic may be melted on to the metal ring to form the structure shown in Fig. 8, in which the helix has been melted to form a glass ring 23<SP>1</SP> attached to the metal. ring 25<SP>1</SP>.
