Abstract

491,557. Sealing leading - in wires. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. March 1, 1937, No. 6055. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1936. [Class 36] [Also in Group XL] In an electron-discharge device the leading-in wires are sealed in a glass disc 10, which is connected to the metal envelope 1 by a U -sectional metal ring 5; this may be of chrome iron or nickel iron copper plated. The side 6 of the ring may be thinner than the remainder ; a flange 9 is welded to the skirt 3 of the envelope or the flange may have a skirt to be welded to the straight-sided envelope. In manufacture, the ring 5 is set on the forming block 20, Fig. 4, of a press mould and two concentric glass rings 28, 29 are placed on stops inside the ring 5; the leading-in wires are strained through holes 22 in the block and 25 in the press 24, the glass being fused by bunsen flames on to the wires. After further heating with the glass raised above the block 20, the block and press are brought together to form the disc 10 and seal it to the ring 5, an exhausting tube being at the same time fused to the disc. The process may be carried out in a turret type machine. Specification 489,287 is referred to.
