638,566. Cable couplings. RISS, H. G. July 14, 1947, No. 18737. [Class 109] [Also in Group XXII] Wire cables are joined or an eye formed on a single cable by means of a ferrule 1, comprising a metal sleeve having inwardly projecting thickened walls Z in the vicinity of the wedge space between the cables, which is pressed around the wire cables passing therethrough, the thickened portion Z being forced to flow into and completely occupy the wedge space between the cables. In a preferred pressing apparatus, the clamp jaws 2, 3, Fig. 2, thereof are arched in the direction of the clamp bore, so as to prevent the metal of the ferrule from flowing in the longitudinal direction. After pressing, the ferrule thus has one pair of opposite' sides substantially parallel and the other pair barrel-shaped as shown in the formation of an eye 10, Fig. 5a, on a single cable 9, and in the joining of two cable ends 11, 12, Fig. 6. The clamp jaws 2, 3 of the pressing apparatus have cutting edges 6 for removing excess material from the ferrule. Surface steps 7 limit the pressing stroke. Lateral displacement of the clamp jaws is prevented by means of pins 4 sliding in bores 5. The ferrule is preferably made of a light metal alloy.
