Abstract

602,948. Splicing ropes &c. NEWTON, E. P. (American Chain & Cable Co., Inc.). Nov. 12, 1945, No. 30237. [Class 109] Two rope sections are connected together by arranging the separate strands of one rope section helically around the other rope section in the valleys between the strands thereof and binding the separate strands to the body of the rope section. The splices may be made in the making of eyes, between the ends of ropes, and in the attachment of a rope to an intermediate part of another rope. In the formation of an eye, the unlaid end strands of a rope, comprising strands 11 laid about a core 12, are wound about the standing part of the rope so as to lie within the valleys between the adjacent strands thereof, the core being cut off at 13. The strands are then secured in place, such as by applying a clamping member around at least part of the helically wrapped portion. A single long ferrule may be used or, as shown, a pair of ferrules 14, 15, Fig. 6. The ferrules are secured in place by swaging or simple pressing, and are preferably separated a distance sufficient to permit of a snubbing action of the strands around the laid sections. In a modified method of making an eye, half of the strands 21A, Fig. 9, are unlaid from the core and the unlaid end strands 21B of the remainder are helically disposed about the standing part of the rope to form the eye, the core being cut at 23. The strands 21A are then relaid about the core and strands 21B, starting at the unstranded end, forming the eye. The ends of strands 21A are finally unlaid and helically wrapped about the standing part. The splice is then completed with one or more ferrules as before. The unlaid strands may be inserted under the strands of the standing part of the rope directly around the core, the strands of the standing part lying in the valleys of the rope laid within it.
