Abstract

637,215. Projectile fuzes. DELAY, F. March 2, 1948, No. 6588. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 2, 1948.] [Class 9 (i)] The spring-urged striker 5 of a clockwork fuze is held in a retracted position by an oscillating lever 8 which has an aperture through which the striker is allowed to slide only when the lever is allowed to turn, under the action of the striker itself, by the provision of a notch 2b of a surrounding rotary member 2. Further, at least one safety bolt 11 is provided between the aperture in the lever 8 and the primer to prevent the striker from functioning when lever 8 is accidentally released, the bolt in such event being held by the striker itself against outward movement under centrifugal force to the release position. In the form shown, a bevelled edge 5a of the striker coacts with a similar surface on lever 8 to cause the latter to turn about its pivot, but the lever is normally held by a pawl 4. In setting the fuze, the member 2 is rotated clockwise and itself moves the pawl away from lever 8, the latter subsequently being held by the inner wall of the member 2. During flight, the clockwork mechanism moves the member 2 back to its original position, and as the pawl is held away from lever 8 by centrifugal force the striker is released when the lever 8 registers with the notch 2b of member 2. Two members 11 are provided, each having a semicircular opening to provide between them a circular hole in which a reduced part 5b of the striker can fit. The members, which are acted on by springs 12a, 12b, move to the release position under centrifugal force, but during transport serve to prevent complete movement of the striker. The engagement of the striker, in such event, in the semicircular apertures prevents the members 11 from moving outwardly.
