Abstract

635,720. Nail &c. receiving I-beams. FISCHER, H. C., and HIGGINS, A. H. W. May 16, 1947, No. 13265. Convention date, May 27, 1946. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] A nail, screw &c. receiving I-beam comprises a pair of channel members 2, 4 with their webs 6 spot welded together, one or each of the webs 6 having a longitudinally extending rib 14 forming a groove intermediate its flanges 8, 10 and a series of spaced elongated protuberances 12 for holding the nails driven into the beam between the channel members 2, 4. As shown two series of oppositely curved protuberances 12 extend between the rib 14 and flanges 8, 10 of each channel member, so that the nails are firmly held and, on entering the passage-way formed by the adjacent ribs 14, are directed tangentially of the inner wall of the passage-way. When the I-beam is used as a joist or stud, .the passage-way may be used for carrying electrical wiring, water piping &c. which may be led in and out through spaced openings 26 in the ribs 14, the openings also serving to permit piping &c. to pass transversely of the I-beams. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, describes also a nail receiving element formed by bending one of the channel members upon itself about its rib 14 so as to bring the web portions and the two series of protuberances on opposite sides of the rib together with the flanges 8, 10 lying in the same plane and in continuation of each other. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
