Abstract

640,087. Vehicle bodies. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Jan. 7, 1946, No. 496. [Classes 103(iv) and 108 (i)] [Also in Group X] A pillar for use in the construction of road and rail vehicle bodies comprises two spaced side walls having outwardly directed flanges at both margins, and connected by at least one transverse web inwardly spaced from a margin or the margins of the side walls to provide an open mouth or channel between the side walls. As shown, the beam is formed in two parts from sheet metal, one part providing the side walls 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, flanges 4 and 5 and a web 6, and the other providing a web 2 defining the bottom of a channel 9 and having flanges 7, 8 which fold over the flanges 4. The web 6 may lie closer to the web 2 to provide a further channel at the bottom of the section or may be dished inwardly. The side walls 3, 3<SP>1</SP> may be bowed instead of plane, and the section may be formed in one part formed by manipulating a metal tube. Wooden fillets may be inserted in the channels.
