Abstract
634,035. Hand tools for nailing and stapling. PACKAGE SEALING CO., Ltd., CHEESEMAN, J. J., and CHANDLER, H. E. March 12, 1948, No. 7601. [Class 89 (iii)] In a nailing or stapling device, nails or staples fed by hand into a barrel 1 through a chute 6 are retained therein by a spring device until they are driven by a weighted ram 2 which during at least the first part of its stroke is unopposed by a return spring. In a nailing tool, the spring device comprises levers 18, 19 pressed together by leaf springs 42, 43 and pivoted at their upper ends 32, 33 within a ring 14 which secures a bush 5 to the lower end of the barrel 1, the bush having grooves 22, 23 within which the levers are retained by a cover 34. The levers 18, 19 are recessed at 28, 29 and 40, 41 to guide and receive the nails. The ram 2 is guided at the upper end by a cap 11 and bead 12 and at the lower end by an enlargement 10 on the driver 8 which is screwed into the ram. The tool is guided on the work 56 to be nailed by a spring tongue 52, 55 adjustable by a screw 57. In a stapling tool, the spring device comprises a spring-pressed ball and the guide 52, 55 is replaced by a groove in the lower end of the bush 5 which receives a wire to be stapled on to the work.
