Abstract

779,042. Nailing apparatus. REICH, K. M., and REICH, K. [trading as REICH, K. M. [Firm of]]. Sept. 13, 1955 [Sept. 18, 1954], No. 26171/55. Class 89 (3). In a nailing machine operated by compressed air, the return stroke of the driving piston 6 is effected by compressed air forced into a storage space 21 during the driving stroke of the piston. In one embodiment, the piston 6 carries a ram 7 which during the driving stroke enters the bore 2 of a guide 3 into which a nail 4 has been fed from a hopper 5. As soon as the ram 7 enters the bore 2 the space in' the cylinder 1 below the piston becomes closed to the atmosphere and the air therein is forced through openings 22 into the storage space 21. When the nail 4 has been driven into the workpiece 8 the operating lever 18 of the control valve 10 is released so that at the valve 10 the space in the cylinder 1 above the piston is closed to the compressed air supply 20 and is opened to the atmosphere, whereupon the compressed air in the space 21 returns the piston 6 to the upper end of the cylinder 1 where it is retained by a spring- loaded detent 23 in readiness for the next nail-driving operation. In a modification Fig. 3 (not shown) the nail driving ram is separate from the driving piston and is permanently accommodated in the bore 2 so that the whole of the air beneath the driving piston is forced into the space 21. The driving piston is made in two relatively movable parts connected by a compression spring which replaces the buffer spring 9.
