Abstract

1,013,995. Stapling machines. W. SCHAFROTH. May 6, 1964 [May 13, 1963], No. 18941/64. Heading B4C. A power-operated stapling machine comprises a stapling mechanism 3 driven downwardly by a pneumatically-operated piston 7 upon actuation of a valve 21 by a trigger 2, and stop means 39, 40 for contacting the underside of the piston in order to actuate a trip lever 32 and thereby move the valve to cause compressed air to raise the piston and exhaust the air above it. The trip-lever 32 is mounted on rollers 51 in the trigger 2 which is pivoted on a pin 47 in the machine housing the lever being normally loaded by a spring 46 to the position shown in Fig. 4. In operation, upon activation of the trigger, the valve 21 is raised by the abut. ment of the lever 32 with an extension 22 on the valve, air then being directed from a reservoir 1 via passages to act upon the top side of the piston thereby driving it downwardly. Nearing the end of the stroke the underside of the piston abuts a spring-loaded pin 39 which strikes the lever 32 so as to cause the extension 22, under the action of a spring 30, to enter a hole 63 in the lever and thereby allow the valve to return to the position in which air is fed to the underside of the piston to return it. Passages are provided so that exhaust air, together with an oil mist, flow over the stapling mechanism 3 which comprises a staple driver and a retractable anvil. The bottom edge of the driver is chamfered in order to co-operate with a similar front edge of the staple pusher 62 so that, if the machine is operated after the last staple has been used, the driver merely strikes the front edge of the pusher and so moves the latter rearwardly. A buffer spring 12 is mounted on the piston rod 9.
