1454826 Stapler U MONACELLI 12 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 48811/74 Heading B4C A pneumatically operated stapler comprises a handle 1 forming a reservoir 8 for air a cylinder 10 a valve 21 movable in a valve guide 22 and able to close the top of cylinder 10, a piston 17 slidable in cylinder 10 having a hammer 18 to drive the staples and a trigger 47 which causes actuation of piston 17 when a safety device 63 is engaged by the workpiece. In operation when the stapler is connected to a supply of compressed air the valve 27 is held against the upper edge of cylinder 10 by pressure in annular space 28 which is connected to the reservoir 8. Upward movement of safety device 63 allows that when trigger 47 is raised air pressure which raises valve 46 is released to atmosphere and valve 46 drops cutting off pressure supply to space 28 and venting it to the atmosphere via ports 33. The valve 21 is raised by excess pressure below it and the pressure in reservoir 8 is applied to piston 17 through the gap between valve 27 and top of cylinder 10 thus causing the driving of a staple. During downward movement of the piston air below the piston is forced into compartment 19. Upon release of trigger 47 valve 46 returns to its original position and valve 27 is lowered. As the piston rises under air pressure from the reservoirs 19, a poppet valve 35 in the valve 27 rises to allow air above the piston to vent through parts 33 to atmosphere.
