Abstract
1496271 Nailing gun A J SMITH 26 Feb 1975 [13 March 1974] 8046/75 Heading B4C A pneumatic nailing machine has an axially movable ram 14 to drive in nails fed serially from a magazine 18 the nails being held in an inclined position with respect to the barrel and means for serially discharging the nails into the barrel. As shown, the ram 14 is mounted on a piston 84 slidable in a cylinder 87. The cylinder is surrounded by an axially slidable vale 100 which alternately feeds pressurized fluid above or below the piston 84. As shown in Fig. 9 the valve 100 is seated against seal 98 prior to a nail driving stroke. A safety device 160 on the barrel 16 is provided to prevent accidental actuation. When the barrel is placed in contact with the workpiece it causes opening of valve 74 in pipeline 150 which in conjunction with the opening of a trigger actuated poppet valve 148 allows air from a storage chamber 102 in the handle 10 to pass through a pipeline 172 to valve 120. This valve 120 in its normal position allows equalization of pressure in chambers 102 and 112 which, due to the different areas of surfaces 106, 105 on valve 100 keeps the valve in its upper position. However, on actuation of valve 120 cuts off this communication and vents chamber 112 to atmosphere and causes downward movement of valve 100. The chamber below piston 84 is vented to atmosphere by means of openings 132 and chevron valves or seals 140a, 140b on these openings ensure that whichever side of the piston 84 is pressurized that pressure cannot leak to atmosphere. Upon release of poppet valve 148 and safety device 160 valve 74 is closed, valve 120 returns to its normal position, valve 100 rises and the space below piston 84 is pressurized due to actuation of a flexible disc valve 185 (Fig. 6) whilst the space above is vented to atmosphere allowing it to rise to the start position. Nails arriving from magazine 18 arrive at a slight angle to the barrel 16 (Fig. 6) and a piston connected to a nail engaging shuttle 44 draws them into alignment with the barrel whilst a surface on the shuttle prevents entry of any further nails.
