[Also in Group XXIII] A pneumatic &c. nailing or stapling machine comprises a driver D driven by a piston 7 in a cylinder 2 to which compressedair is admitted above the piston from a reservoir 3, a control valve 60 having a port 62 to the reservoir and one, 72, to atmosphere, and a further valve 82 communicating at 85 with the cylinder 2, connected by a duct 81 to valve 60 and having an orifice 84 for exhausting to atmosphere air beneath the piston. The machine may be stationary or portable, with a handle 4 and a fastener magazine 7. A stick of staples in the magazine is fed along a core C by a spring (not shown) acting on a pusher J. The driver D, passing through a sealing buffer 50 at the bottom of the cylinder 2, is connected to the piston by a screwthreaded stud 20 having a rectangular neck which is engaged by the limbs of a U-spring 25 retained by a pin 26. Rotation of the piston to adjust the projection of the driver D is by a knob 30, which can be depressed to engage wings 37, carried by the knob, with driving recesses 40 in the top of the piston-skirt. With the valve-settings shown, compressed-air acts on both ends of the raised piston, that on the lower end of larger area passing through the port 62, duct 81 and past the non-return packing 93 on the valve-slide 90. Operation of the poppet 64 of valve 60, by a pivoted trigger 75, closes the port 62 and opens the port 72, permitting the slide 90 to rise and uncover the orifice 84. This exhausts the bottom of the cylinder 2 and allows the piston to be driven down for driving a staple.
