Abstract

633,971. Toothed gearing. ERRINGTON, F., and SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. Sept. 12, 1947, No. 25055. [Class 80 (i)] For eliminating backlash in toothed gearing the drive from driving to driven members is arranged in two parallel trains and one element of the closed train thus formed is movable bodily between gears on opposite sides thereof to take up the backlash. As shown, the driving pinion 1 is geared to driven wheel 2 through two trains A, B and is adjustable between gears 3a, 4a, in the direction of the arrow by any suitable supporting means to take up the backlash in the trains and set up a predetermined initial strain between the teeth. Spring-loading of the pinion may be employed to allow for any irregularities in the gears. In a modified arrangement the pinion 1 is supported on a pivoted and spring-loaded lever or bracket to move between two oppositely disposed gears.
