Abstract
630,869. Releasable fastenings ; hinges. WOOLER, J. Aug. 27, 1946, No. 25646. [Classes 44 and 65 (ii)] In a hinge mounting enabling a door to pivot about either of two opposite sides while preventing accidental disengagement of both sides each of the two hinges on one side comprises a pair of plates, one of which is provided with a pair of sockets 5 and the other with plungers 8 functioning as pivots releasably engaged with the sockets. The plungers, which are pressed into the sockets by a spring 9, are engaged with the adjacent ends of a pair of levers 12 crossjointed together at 13. One of the opposite ends of the levers is engaged with a rod 15 and the other said opposite end with a tube 17 which surrounds the rod. Relative axial movement imparted to the rod and tube brings together the ends of the levers engaged with the plungers to withdraw the latter from their sockets. Associated with the two hinges on a side of the door is a handle mounted on a rotatable spindle 29, the latter carrying a double-armed lever 30 which engages bell-crank levers 21 and 22. The ends of lever 21 are respectively engaged with the tube 17 and a rod 26 corresponding to rod 15, and the ends of lever 22 with the rod 15 and a tube 28 corresponding to tube 17. Turning of the handle thus rocks the bellcrank levers to effect relative axial movement of the rods and tubes. Each inner bell-crank lever is provided with an abutment 44 adapted, when the corresponding handle is actuated, to impart axial movement to an inwardly spring-biassed rod 32, the inner end of which abuts a wedge-shaped plate 35 pivotally mounted at 36. Movement of one rod is conveyed through the plate to the other rod. The latter thus makes contact with its corresponding abutment 44 to prevent simultaneous actuation of the handles when the door is closed. The pivot 36 is formed by the upper end of a downwardly spring-biased rod 37, the lower end of which rests on a tapered surface on a plunger contained in a socket 43 mounted in the lower part of the door. Upon the latter opening, a spring projects the plunger from its socket, allowing the wedge plate to fall and to move the rods 32 into contact with the abutments 44, when neither handle can be actuated. The Provisional Specification states that the sockets 5 may be formed with lugs adapted to guide the plungers into engagement with the sockets.
