' To enable-the doorsto betfastened in fully op en, andpartially'opened positiong-ea; latching means is provided. This means comprises a quadrant or bar 31, pivoted at its top to a pin 32, fastened at one end to a cylindrical boss 32a on the cylinder casting and having a nut 33 at its other end for retaining the quadrant. The quadrant projects through a slot 34 formed in the handle arm 24 of the lever and is provided with notches 35 and 35a, adapted to engage a pin 36 which extends transversely across the slot 34:. A spring 37 is provided for urging the quadrant outwardly to insure engagement of the notches with the pin 36. The spring comprises a straight leg 37a, bearing on the inner edge of the quadrant, a spiral 37?) coiled on the boss 32a on the cylinder casting, and a straight leg 370, bearing on the underside of a lug 37d projecting from the cylinder casting. To release the lever from latched positions a handle 88 is provided at the bottom end of the quadrant.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the arm'24 of the hand lever is moved downwardly to open the doors the spring 37 will automatically move the quadrant outwardly engaging the notch 35 with the pin 36, when the doors are partially open. If the lever is then released the doors will be latched in partially open position. If the lever is moved further downwardly to fully open the doors, the quadrant will move outwardly engaging the notch 35a with the pin 36, thus latching the doors in fully open position as shown in dot and dash lines in Figure 1. To release the doors from latched positions, the operator has merely to grasp the handle 38 and push the quadrant inwardly, whereupon the doors will drop by gravity to closed position.
While one of the preferred forms of construction has been shown, it is obvious that many variations in procedure, and in the form, arrangement and construction of the parts can be made, and the invention is not therefore limited to the particular embodiment disclosed, but includes such changes and modifications as come within the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
The invention claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: p
1. In a fire door apparatus, the combination of a fire door adapted to open laterally and vertically, a pivot for the door, a lever having two arms for swinging the door on its pivot, a pivot fulcruming the lever, and means on the said door operably engaging one arm of the lever, the axis of the door pivot and the axis of the lever pivot being spaced one from the other to effect the gradual approach of said means toward said lever pivot during the opening of the door.
2. In a fire door apparatus, the combination of a fire door adapted to open laterally and vertically, a pivot for the door, a lever having two arms for swinging the door on its pivot, a pivot fulcruming the lever, and means on the said door operahly engaging one arm of the lever, the axis of the door pivot and of the lever pivot being substantially parallel and spaced one from the other to effect the gradual approach of said means toward said lever pivot during the opening of the door.
3. In a fire door apparatus, the combination of a door frame; a door; a pivot sup porting the door for opening movement laterally and vertically in a plane parallel to the frame; a. lever having two arms for opening the door; a pivot fulcruming the lever; and means on said door operably engaging an arm of the lever, the axisof the door pivot and the axis of the lever pivot being spaced one .from the other whereby said means will gradually approach said lever pivot during the opening of the door.
4:. In a fire door apparatus, the combina tion of a door frame; a door; an abutment on the door; a pivot supporting the door for swinging movement laterally and vertically in a plane parallel to the frame; and a lever having a handle arm, a fulcrum shaft having its axis spaced from the axis of the door pivot, and a lifting arm disposed to engage the abutment on the door to effect opening of the same whereby said abutment will gradually approach said lever fulcrum when the door is being opened.
5. In a fire door apparatus, the combinain t1on of a door frame; a door; an abutment on the door; a pivot supporting the door for swinging movement laterally and vertically in a plane parallel to the frame; a lever comprising a handle arm having latching means, a fulcrum shaft having its axis spaced from the axis of the door pivot, and a lifting arm disposed to engage the abutment on the door to effect opening of the same, whereby the said abutment will gradually move toward the fulcrum during the said opening of the door; a pivoted bar having latching means; and means adapted to automatically move the bar to engage its latching means with? the latching means of the lever, whereby the lever may be latched in open position.
6. In a fire box door apparatus, the com bination of a door; a'pivot for said door adapting the same for vertical lateral opening; an abutment on the door; a lever comprising an arm having a handle and latching means, a fulcrum shaft separate from and independent of said pivot, and a lifting arm disposed to engage the abutment on the door to effect the opening of the door; a bearing 1 carried by an immovable part of the apparatus in which the fulcrum shaft is journalled; and a pivotally mounted bar supported above and extending below said handle and having latching means adapted to engage the latching means of the lever to latch the lever in position to hold the door open, the lower end of said bar serving as a handle for manually moving the bar to release its latching means from latching engagement with the latching means of the lever.
7. In a fire door apparatus, the combination of a door frame; a door adapted to open vertically and laterally in a plane parallel to the frame; an abutment on the door; a lever having two arms, for opening the door, one of said arms operably engaging said abutment; a latch member provided on the other of said arms; a bar-shaped latch member adapted to engage the latch member of the lever pivoted above, and extending downwardly across, and below the lever, providing a part at the lower end thereof for the application of force to disengage said latch members; and a spring acting on said barshaped latch member for automatically engaging said latch members to hold the door in open position. 1
