Abstract
630,742. Engine valve-gear. NORDBERG MANUFACTURING CO. June 19, 1947, No. 16212. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1943. [Class 122(ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A cam-shaft 23 or like timing member is adjusted angularly with respect to the crank-shaft 11 for reversing by means of a train of gears comprising fixed idler gears 29, 32, driving a fixed gear 34 which meshes with a gear 38, movable from position C for forward to position D for reverse running, and driving the shaft 23 through gears 39, 37. The gear 39 is carried in a yoke 45 pivoted on the shaft 23 and the gear 38, and spaced from the gear 39 by a frame 43, is carried by a yoke 47 pivoted at 35 and rotated by a servomotor 51 controlled by a lever 22. Adjustable stops 57, 58 define the positions of the gears for forward and reverse running respectively, and the weight of the gears 38, 39 and the torque reaction biasses the system to whichever position it is set in. A loading spring may increase the biassing force. The servomotor comprises two pistons 54. 55 in cylinders 51, 52, of which 51 is the working cylinder, the opposite ends of 52 being connected by a restriction so that it forms a dash-pot. The reversing gear train may be positioned in the space between two cylinders, the gear 26 comprising a ring-gear mounted in a groove surrounding a crank-shaft coupling 10.
