560,549. Valve gear. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Jan. 19, 1943, No. 978. Convention date, April 20, 1942. [Class 7 (vi)] A pair of spaced cam-shafts 16 is driven by a shaft 25, 30 having at one end a worm 24 engaged by a worm wheel 22 on the end of the crank-shaft 13 and at the other end a worm 32 disposed between and engaging worm wheels 33 on the' ends of the spaced cam-shafts 16. Spaced bearings 26 support the worm 24 between them and a gear-wheel behind the worm wheel 22 drives a separate shaft for actuating accessories. At the junction of the cylinder block 28 and cylinder head 29, a bearing 27 supports the top of the drive shaft 25 and a quill 30 is splined into the shaft, the worm 32 being splined on to the quill. The number of splines adjacent the worm 32 is different from the number adjacent the end of the shaft 25 to provide a differential adjustment permitting the cam-shafts to be timed accurately within 1 degree.
