Abstract

544,485. Driving valve gear, pumps &c. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and HALFORD, F. B. Sept. 5, 1940, No. 13917. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] The valves are driven by a shaft E, Fig. 1, carrying worms K gearing with worm wheels L connected to the valves, while a super-charger or other mechanism is driven from a gear wheel H on the free end F<SP>2</SP> 2 of a shaft F arranged within the shaft E and splined thereto at its other end F<SP>1</SP>. Fig. 6 represents an engine having four banks of cylinders A ... A<SP>3</SP> arranged with two crank shafts B, C, the former of which drives two shafts E arranged between the banks, through gearing P, Q, G. The two shafts E may be driven separately from the two crank shafts B, C. Shafts F within the shafts E carry gears H at their other ends which are both geared to the same supercharger. Each worm wheel L may drive a pair of sleeve 'valves by means of a double-cranked shaft.' The shaft E may consist of two lengths E, El Fig. 2, coupled together by a distance piece N having projections at each end engaging recesses in the ends of the shaft, the whole being enclosed by a sleeve O splined to both shaft sections. The piece N may be enlarged internally at N <SP>2</SP> to provide a bearing for the inner shaft F.
