Abstract

477,609. Four-stroke engines. OPPERMAN, S. E. June 2, 1936, No. 13385. [Class 7 (ii)] The engine consists of two or more pairs of coaxially disposed cylinders with co-operating coupled pistons arranged in units, each unit comprising two pairs of cylinders disposed horizontally in coaxial alignment with each other, a common crank-shaft disposed intermediate and below or above the compression ends of adjacent cylinders, co-operating valve mechanism, a connecting rod and crank chamber arranged parallel to the aligned axes of the cylinders and lever mechanism for transmitting the power developed by the pistons to the connecting rod and crank-shaft. Within a pair of coaxial cylinders 1, 2 reciprocates a double piston 19, 20 formed with a central cylindrical guide 25 for a piston-like member 34 slidable at rightangles to the axis of the cylinders. A twoarmed lever 6, pivoted at its ends to the member 34 and a connecting rod 31 respectively, transmits power from the piston 19, 20 to a crank-shaft 29 disposed intermediately but off-set from the cylinders 1, 2 and the corresponding coaxial pair which completes the unit. The crank-shaft operates the valve mechanism for both the inner and outer cylinders 2, 1 of each pair and drives a propeller shaft through epicyclic gears the pinions of which may be held stationary or driven.
