Abstract

<PICT:0629818/IV (a)/1> A continuous tow of artificial fibres is dried by feeding the wet tow in convolutions on to a travelling support which conveys the tow through one or more drying chambers to a collecting device where the dried tow is withdrawn substantially vertically downwards from the underside of the mass of convolutions. In the apparatus shown the tow is laid in convolutions 2 on a travelling belt 3 which passes through a drying chamber and the dried tow is then transferred from the belt 3 to two parallel moving belts 5, 6 having a gap 9 between them from which conveyer the tow is withdrawn downward through the gap 9 and round a transverse rod 10 to a cross-ball collecting device. The speeds of the conveyers are such that the rates of feed and collection are the same. Instead of multiple conveyers, a single conveyer having the necessary gap may be used.
