APPARATUS FOR LOOSENING YARN PACKAGES Filed Feb. 21. 1941 INVENTOR.
- FREDfR/C/f FAQ VH1 10/1 62 ATTORNE Patented Mar. 14,1944
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE APPARATUS FOR LOOSENING YARN PACKA I GES Frederick Farwell Long, Chester, Pa., assignor to American Viscose Corporation,- Wilmington, DeL, a corporation of Delaware This invention relates to improvements in means for flexing and loosening yarn and thread packages. More particularly, the invention relates to improvements in means for flexing and loosening yarn and thread; packages, such as rayon cakes, to make them more permeable to is to be treated it is desirable to first loosen or flex the cake to make it more permeable. Manual methods and apparatus for doing this have been suggested before but it has been found that these operations consume an excessive amount of time and often cause tangling and damage to the yarn.
The principle object of this invention is to provide improved means for flexing and loosening yarn and thread package to make them more permeable.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved means for flexing and loosenin: rayon cakes which is rapid in its operation and does not tangle or damage the yarn.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the specification and the accompanying drawing.
In thedrawing is shown a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
The invention as shown in the drawing comprises a table or plate member I on which the pulleys 2 and 3 on vertical shafts are mounted. A continuous belt-like member 4 having projecting rib-like members 5 passes around the pulleys. The pulleys are driven by suitable means to move the belt-like member in the direction shown by the arrow. A vertical presser plate member 6, having vertical rib-like members I5, is mounted on the table opposite and spaced from a portion of the belt passing between the pulleys. The presser plate is supported at one end on the. bracket 1 which is fastened to the tabl by the bolt 8 which passes through a slot 9 in the bracket so that the position of this end of the presser plate may be adjusted transversely relative to the belt. The
other end ofthe presser plate is supported by the rod II which passes through the bracket i0 fastened to the table. The presser plate is urged toward the belt by the spring l3 positioned on the rod between the presser plate and the bracket. This end of the presser plate maybe adjusted relative to the belt by the nut I2 which is thread- Application February 21, 1941, Serial No. 380,010 2 Claims. ((31. 18-8) ed on the end of the red. A conveyor belt member i4 is positioned to travel between the beltlike member 4 and the presser plate substantially flush with the top of the table. Suitable means are provided for moving the conveyor belt inthe direction shown by the arrow.
In the operation of the device yarn packages or cakes it, either with or without a, protective covering member, are placed upright on the conveyor belt and are passed between the presser plate and the belt-like member 4. The distance between the presser plate and thebelt is less than the diameter of the cakes or packages. The
cakes or packages are rotated about their axes and are crushed while passing between the belt and the presser plate which causes them to be flexed and loosened. The ribs on the belt-like member and the presser plate insure the movement of the cakes or packages through the device and also aids in flexing and loosening them. The presser plate may be adjusted relative to the belt 4 to accommodate cakes or packages of various sizes and to also vary the degree to which they are loosened or flexed. With this device,
yam cakes or packages may be rapidly flexed or loosened without tangling or damaging the yarn.
While a preferred embodiment of the-invention has been shown, it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
What. I claim is:
1. An apparatus for loosening 'a yarn package comprising opposed presser members, one of said presser members comprising a plate-like member, the other comprising a belt-like member, said belt-like member being adapted to rotate the yarn package and move the yarn package between the plate-like member and the belt-like member, and additional means positioned between the presser. members for supporting and moving the yarn package between the presser like member, and a conveying means positioned between the presser members to assist in moving yam packages between the presser members;
