Abstract

1,264,327. Varying denier filaments. COURTAULDS Ltd. 4 July, 1969 [5 July, 1968], No. 32128/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division F2] Thermoplastic filaments have a lengthwise variation of denier imparted thereto by filament-drawing apparatus which comprises :a feed roll 3, a draw roll 4 having a matt circumferential band 9 and a mirror-finish circumferential band 10 on its cylindrical surface, a separator roll 5 having a matt cylindrical surface, and a driven filament deflector arranged to deflect intermittently the filaments from contact with one band into contact with the other band. The filament deflector preferably comprises a cam 11 mounted on a driven shaft 12, the cam surface having two arcuate portions of larger and smaller diameter, and positioned such that when the cam rotates and the larger diameter arc contacts the yarn, the yarn is deflected to the path 1A and on to the matt band 9, the yarn reverting to its original path on to the polished band 10 when the cam has completed a cycle. The yarn wrap round the draw roll 4 and separator roll 5 slips on the matt band 9 but not on the polished band 10, so that it is drawn to a lesser extent when passing round the matt band and a thicker portion of yarn results. In an example, a yarn of polycaproamide filaments is drawn.
