628,720. Unit air heaters. DELANEY, C. T., and GALLAY, Ltd. Oct. 9, 1947, No. 27159. [Class 137] [Also in Group XI] A unit air heater comprises an annular chamber 30 through which air is caused to pass axially by positive means, e.g. a fan 25, and an electric heating element 27 in the chamber, the outer wall 28, 29 of which is hollow to provide a passage 33 for air to cool the wall. A metal cylinder 11 is supported on a base plate 12 having an orifice 13 below which is a baffle plate 15, and inside the cylinder 11 is an electric motor 22 for the fan 25. The passage 33 is formed between two concentric shells 28, 29 the outer 28 of which has louvres at 31 and 32, the top edge of the inner shell 29 being outwardly flared at 34. Air to be heated enters at 31, passes through chamber 30 and leaves at 32, whilst air to cool the motor 22 enters at 21 between the baffle plate 15 and an annular lip 18 on the base plate 12, and flows up through aperture 13 and cylinder 11 and leaves at 32. The fan 25 causes a lowering of pressure at the lower end 35 of the passage 33, and air enters the top of that passage to cool the outer wall of chamber 30. A pilot lamp 39 may be disposed in the cylinder 11.
