Abstract

628,086. Jointing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SOWTER, A. B. Sept. 9. 1947, No. 24765. [Class 83 (iv)] In cold welding two similar or dissimilar metals, e.g. aluminium and copper, of different hardness, the area of pressure application is inversely proportional to the hardness, being greater for the softer material. Co-operating press tools may be used to join aluminium and copper conductors &c. The co-operating surfaces are cleaned by scratch-brushing and for Brinell numbers of 21 and 42 the tools have areas <SP>9</SP>/ 16 inch by <SP>5</SP>/ 64 inch and ¢ inch by <SP>3</SP>/ 64 inch respectively for 20 S.W.G. material. The joint may be corrosion-proofed with pitch.
